Baby quilts

My goodness there have been a lot of babies this year.  I made four of these quilts in the last 6 months.  I  got this idea from a quilt that was one of Kelsey's favorites.  The design was random sizes of rectangle pieces sewn in strips.  I put my math skills to work and came up with a pattern.

Quilt size 44 X 39
Purchase 5 different kinds of fabric – one of these will also be the border and backing
1/3 yard of 4 kinds
2 yards of other (additional for trim and backing)
Cut from each fabric (2) 4 ½” strips(each strip the full width of fabric)
Cut for the border – (4) 2 ½” strips(each strip the full width of fabric)
The remaining fabric is for the backing(cut when quilt is all put together)

Cut each 4 ½” strip in lengths:
10 ½”
7 ½”
6 ½
(2) 5 ½”
3 ½”
***each row in the quilt will have one piece of each size and two of the 5 1/2"
Lay out all the pieces in the quilt as you want them in the design.  You have to play with the colors and piece sizes a bit until you get it to look right.  Once this is completed - sew the pieces together(1/4" seam allowance) in each strip.  Once the strips are finished - sew the strips together.  Sew on the border - be sure to sew on the longest edge border first.

I prefer Warm and Natural batting for my quilts.  Lay your quilt on top of the batting and cut it just a bit larger than the quilt.  Do the same with the fabric backing.  Pin your quilt together with pins all over it to keep it securely in place.  Using yarn, tie off in the middle of each strip every four inches.  Trim the excess off the edges.  I used fleece binding to finish the edges to make them extra soft.  That's it - the simplest quilt you can make.
I made matching quilts for our new grand babies Noah and Natalia

Just one more picture - they are so precious!
